Heat is the invisible culprit

When LEDs work, most of the electricity does not turn into light, but into heat - usually 60% to 70% of the electricity is converted into heat.

The accumulation of heat will cause the LED to "fever", resulting in brightness attenuation, color drift, and premature damage. Every time the temperature rises by 10°C, the life of the LED is shortened by half. It can be said that the root cause of many quality problems is the failure to manage "heat".

Based on the deep understanding of this pain point, Nationstar Optoelectronics conducts thermal resistance testing throughout the entire life cycle of product development, mass production, and failure analysis, and uses precise data to protect the thermal reliability of each LED product.

What is thermal resistance test

Thermal resistance test, simply put, is to see how the heat travels when it is conducted inside the LED, where it travels smoothly, and where it gets stuck.

Nationstar Optoelectronics adopts a transient thermal test method: by applying precise electrical signals to the device, the junction temperature changes are recorded at microsecond speed, and then the complete path of heat from the chip to the outside is deduced through algorithms. Just like doing a thermal CT for an LED, engineers can clearly distinguish the thermal resistance distribution of the chip layer, solid crystal layer, substrate layer, and heat sink layer. It is clear at a glance where there is congestion and where there is smooth flow. This non-destructive technology is known as the "gold standard" in LED thermal reliability testing.

At Nationstar Optoelectronics, thermal resistance testing is not a "check once before leaving the factory", but the main line of quality throughout the entire product life cycle:

1. R&D stage: Evaluate the heat dissipation capabilities of different packaging structures and materials. The structure function curve generated by the tester helps us accurately locate the thermal bottleneck and thermal margin.

2. Engineering verification: Compare thermal resistance data under different batches and process parameters, select the best process window, and ensure that mass-produced products are "naturally good at dissipating heat."

3. Quality analysis: The thermal resistance of samples returned by customers is retested and compared with the factory data. How much does the thermal resistance increase? Where has the structure function changed? It can accurately determine whether it is interface degradation, material fatigue or process deviation. The root cause of the disease can be found without destroying the sample.
