MediaTek enters Micro LED optical communications

According to a report by the Industrial and Commercial Times on February 9, MediaTek disclosed its technical layout in the field of optical communications for the first time. According to reports, MediaTek has mastered independently developed Micro LED light source technology and developed a new active optical fiber cable solution based on this, which is planned to be officially displayed at the American Optical Fiber Communications Exhibition in April this year.

The solution launched by MediaTek this time is mainly aimed at the active optical cable market. This type of product is designed for short-distance high-speed data interconnection and can be widely used in high-traffic scenarios such as between server cabinets and inside data centers to achieve high-efficiency and low-latency data transmission.

Against the background of the surge in data center throughput demand driven by the explosion of AI computing power, optical communication technology is evolving towards higher bandwidth and lower power consumption. Micro LED is becoming a new path that the industry is paying attention to due to its low power consumption, high bandwidth, easy integration and potential cost advantages in optical communications. Different from Micro LED display applications, the Micro LED ecosystem in the field of optical communications is more complex, involving multiple links such as chips, packaging, drivers, and system integration.

Experts say that Display has gathered key manufacturers of Micro LED optical communications. According to incomplete statistics, there are currently more than 7 LED chip companies deploying Micro LED optical communications related technologies. In the packaging sector, companies such as Jufei Optoelectronics, Nationstar Optoelectronics, and Dongshan Precision are also actively expanding their optical communications business and cooperating with companies related to the industry chain.

It is worth noting that the industrial chain in Taiwan, China has quietly formed a synergistic trend in this field. TSMC has cooperated with American start-up Avicena in 2025 to jointly develop optical interconnect solutions based on Micro LED. TSMC is mainly responsible for CMOS receiver integration and packaging. MediaTek also uses TSMC's COUPE advanced packaging platform for solution development. In addition, Taiwanese manufacturers such as Lianjun, Huaxingguang, and Guangsheng have also cooperated with international customers in manufacturing related products.

In January this year, Taiwanese manufacturer Nitron Technology announced its cooperation with Optical Technology, a member of the World Core ecosystem, to jointly develop a new generation of AI optical interconnection platform. This cooperation marks the official extension of Micro LED technology from the display field to high-speed computing architecture. In the future, it is expected to replace the current mainstream active cables and provide key transmission technology support for the next generation of computing infrastructure.

With the entry of many key manufacturers, it not only reveals that Micro LED technology is expanding from the display track to the broader optoelectronic integration field, but also reflects that a Micro LED optical communication industry chain covering chips, packaging, and system integration is rapidly taking shape, and is expected to reshape the short-distance high-speed interconnection market pattern in the next few years.
