ams OSRAM releases two red LEDs to optimize plant lighting applications

Recently, ams OSRAM has released two red LEDs for plant lighting, which can further increase plant growth speed and reduce the application cost of LED plant lighting.

OSLONO® Optimal Series 640nm Red LED

Recently, ams OSRAM released the latest product of the OSLON® Optimal plant lighting series - 640nm red LED. Currently, the OSLON® Optimal series includes 660nm ultra-red light, 730nm far-red light, 450nm deep blue light and white light LED device products. The release of 1640nm red LED once again expanded the product portfolio of OSLON® Optimal.

The new red light products released by ams OSRAM can effectively improve the energy efficiency of plant lighting and reduce electricity costs. In terms of performance, the new red light product has a photosynthetic photon energy efficiency (PPE) of 3.53 μmol/J, an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 66.3%, a radiant flux of 485mW, a photon flux (PPF) of 2.58 μmol/s, a peak wavelength of 640nm, and a main wavelength of 630nm.

According to ams OSRAM, experiments at Wageningen University have proven that the combination of OSLON® Optimal series 640nm and 660nm red LEDs and white LEDs can effectively increase the dried biomass level of indoor planting environments.

In addition, experiments have also shown that the OSLON® Optimal series of red LEDs can help prevent photobleaching problems in some plant species, and can prevent fungal and bacterial infections in green leafy vegetables such as basil.

Currently, 640nm red LED products are available for bulk ordering.

The fifth-generation ultra-red LED has an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 78.8%

ams OSRAM also released the fifth-generation OSLON® Square ultra-red LED. Compared with the previous generation product, the new-generation ultra-red LED has the characteristics of high efficiency and high photosynthetic photon flux, which can help plants grow faster and reduce plant cultivation costs. The new product is suitable for greenhouses, vertical agriculture, and single-light source planting scenarios.


The ultra-red LED is packaged in ceramic and has a silicone lens. At 700mA, the photon flux (PPF) and photosynthetic photon energy efficiency (PPE) of the ultra-red LED are 5.96μmol/s and 4.32μmol/J respectively; at 350mA are 3.02μmol/s and 4.62μmol/J respectively; the peak wavelength of the product is 660nm, the main wavelength is 640nm, and the spectral bandwidth is 25nm.

It is reported that at a junction temperature of 25°, the electro-optical conversion efficiency of the new generation of ultra-red LED reaches 78.8%, exceeding the 76.8% of the previous generation product, which can effectively reduce the cost of growing vegetables, flowers and medicinal plants in indoor environments.
